Safety lanes for coastal shipping
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox said the navy has set up safety lanes for Atlantic coastal shipping and boosted harbor protection after the Normanie fire. Vice Admiral Waesche was put in charge of harbor protection, coast guard personnel will rise from 35 000 to 60 000, and eastern sea frontier commander Andrews ordered ships to travel in outlined lanes for physical protection. He noted more than 1 000 ships cleared New York for southern ports with only five sunk and pointed to low Atlantic shipping losses. Submarines target specific ship types while patrol airpower increases.

Last fall eight and ten year terms were imposed on Browne and Willie Bioff, a west coast labor racketeer.
