VFW honors Iowa man who saved wife in plane crash
Bill Lawson of Urbandale received a VFW heroism award for pulling his unconscious wife Janet from a burning small plane after a Septem ber crash near Ankeny. Janet survived serious injuries after brain swelling and heart surgery while Bill tended her at the hospital and stayed by her side.

Man stabbed to death outside Des Moines bar
Des Moines police said a man found near El Vaquero Bar and Restaurant was stabbed in the neck and died. Ruben Lopez Chavez, 35, of Des Moines, was identified as the victim. Three people were charged in connection with the case, including a 29 year old with second degree murder.

Ridgeway man denied appeal in wife's murder
The 8th Circuit upheld a Iowa Supreme Court ruling denying a new trial for Robert Wemark of Ridgeway in the 1993 stabbing death of his wife Melissa. Wemark claimed ineffective counsel over disclosing the knife location. the court said issues were not first presented to state courts and cannot be reviewed. His attorney Alfredo Parrish said they will consider another appeal.
