Wastewater bypass at Denver plant spills into Cedar River
About 100000 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into Quarter Section Run and six miles to the Cedar River after a lift station pump seal failed Sunday night. The discharge ended before 8 am Monday. the lift station was back online by afternoon. DNR investigators will monitor the stream. 2002 saw 45 bypass cases statewide.

Gunman commits self in Guttenberg high school office
Richards Hubbard III, a 17 year old Richland Ridge senior, brought a .22 caliber rifle to Clayton Ridge High School and shot himself in the abdomen in the principal's office. He was airlifted to University Hospitals Iowa City and is in stable condition.

College Community to hold hearing on 3.4 percent tax levy hike
Cedar Rapids district school board set a public hearing for April 14 at 7 30 p m on a proposed 50 cent rate increase for 2003 04 raising the levy to 14 90 per 1000 and funding a 44.4 million budget. The hike costs a $100 000 home about 766 annually with 22 more per year, and funds additional teachers, Prairie Ridge opening, and reserves. refinanced 4 7 million in bonds cut 7 cents of the previously planned 57 cent rise saving nearly 247 000 over seven years. The board awarded the bond deal to First Trust Portfolios L P at 2 8571 percent.
