A comet is a mixture of ice rocks dust and frozen gases with a nucleus as its core. The nucleus measures less than a mile to 3 miles wide and when approaching the sun the frozen gases heat and evaporate releasing dust to form a coma. The solar wind blows the coma into a tail that points away from the sun.
The sun powers the comet glow through reflected light and gas emission. Comet nuclei shrink with each solar pass while most comets stay far in space. About 800 comets have known orbits ranging three to 200 years. In the United States the best view is expected in March and April 1986.
The Albert Einstein Planetarium in Washington D C presents Comet Quest about Halleys Comet return. The Mini Page thanks the museum for assistance with this story.
