Dow tests 1000 mark as rally lifts stocks

The Dow Jones edged toward 1000 on a rally sparked by falling interest rates, trading moderately active with the index near 998.46 at 1 p.m. EST. Advances led declines 831 to 509 with 1,815 NYSE issues. IC Industries climbed after confirming an unfriendly takeover bid while Kennecott rose on news of a $1.77 billion merger.
