Marco Island artificial reef yields 24-pound redfish
Jerry Battes of Hudsonville fishing with Ray Page aboard a charter boat landed a 24-pound redfish two miles offshore in 20 feet of water. The 38 inch catch far exceeds typical Florida west coast redfish weights of five pounds. The reef uses about 24,000 tires compacted and bundled and placed last March by Goodyear. A second reef is approved by the Army Corps and will be built five miles offshore by Deltona Corp.
