About 6 000 housewives in 42 states will report how they spend food dollars. National Analysts Inc under contract with the agriculture department conducts April to June survey covering city and rural homes to aid nutritionists and home economists with better food use education.

One-Fifth of Farm Workers Are Women

The Agriculture Department reports that about one fifth of rural wage earners are women and that more of the so-called weaker sex may join the labor force. Growth in rural women’s employment has occurred mainly among middle aged wives and younger women. Some are replacing male workers who left for city jobs.

Linn County Board fixes road districts and gas rates

The Linn County Board of Supervisors acts on Feb 22 and 24 minutes, approves road district establishment for Bellon et al, refunds $100 for overpaid assessments, sets hearings for secondary road costs, accepts bonds, and passes a gas rate ordinance for Cedar Rapids by Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co. Oat Seed Availability Remains High Across Iowa

A statewide survey shows most recommended oat varieties are still available in Iowa. Seed oats markets are sellers’ market this year, urging farmers to buy certified seed and diversify by planting two to three varieties to reduce risk. Clintland seed, newly released, is limited in some counties but others have stock. contracts merit careful reading to avoid inflated prices.

Hatchery Output Hits 7 Year Low in Iowa February

Iowa commercial hatcheries hatched 4.2 million chicks in February 1955, the smallest February total since 1948. For the first two months of the year output reached 4.9 million, a 47 percent drop from 9.3 million in the same period a year earlier, with the 1949-53 February average at 5.413 million.
