Lawyer fights Linn inmate work release fee increase

Public Defender Jose Olvera asks a judge to halt Linn County from charging inmates 20 dollars daily for weekend sentences or work release. Clifford Melsha began a 30 day jail term March 4 and paid 140 dollars upfront for work release. Olvera says the fee shifts meal costs and seeks a reasonable meals charge while noting past protests against the 10 to 20 dollar hike. The county began imposing weekend inmate fees last summer, sparking criticism that the jail operates like a hotel under the so called pay and stay plan.
