Weather Outlook and City Notices From March Report

Partly cloudy through Wednesday with highs in the mid 30s to mid 50s and light snow possible in the northwest Tuesday night. Tuesday night low 13 to 28 east to west, with milder Thursday. Also includes local government actions, court notices, services, and numerous civil filings and appointments with dates and names.

Snowbound roads close hundreds of schools in NE Iowa

Northeast Iowa faced blocked highways and nearly 90 school closings after a weekend snowstorm. Officials cited heavy snows and gusty winds causing near zero visibility and numerous minor accidents. The Iowa Highway Commission listed blocked routes from Postville to McGregor and other segments, while areas north remained mostly open with limited traffic.

Retiring Cedar Rapids educator honored for service on school board

Jensen receives framed resolution of appreciation for nearly 130 years on the board. It notes chairmanships in 1952 53 and 1956 59, 1950 Iowa Association of School Boards presidency, and outstanding community service. A gavel and certificate of service are presented at his last meeting. Canvass shows no change in Cedar Rapids board totals. Linn County results adjust Loren Airy votes to 471 from 489 in the race against George Michel.

Turkeys Die In Fire At Galena Farm

About 11,500 young turkeys were killed in a $75,000 blaze at the Robert Hahn turkey farm on the edge of Galena Illinois. Firefighters battled snow blocked roads, cuts fences, and drove across fields to reach the scene. A hatchery brood house and dressing plant were destroyed. the storage plant was frozen. Cause undetermined.

Reapportionment Debate Advances in Legislature

Linn County Agency Joins United Fund Drive

The Linn County Society for Crippled Children and Adults becomes the twentieth member of the fall United Fund campaign after returning its contract to the Public Welfare bureau. The Wel fare bureau approved a Red Cross contract for 1960, and the Visiting Nurses Association may spend 212.80 on a typewriter. The Home for Aged Women may pay 721.25 for Mrs. Elma Stolp's medical expenses.

Juvenile Court Judge Bill Sent to Senate

Des Moines Iowa bill clarifying the number of juvenile court judges a county may have passed the House 84 0 and moves to the Senate. Co sponsored by Rep Robert F Wilson the measure allows more than one juvenile court judge if district court judges so decide. Supt of Schools Arnold Salisbury wins a unanimous Cedar Rapids board approval for a new 3 year contract starting July 1. Salary rises by 500 dollars per year to 17 500 for 1961 62 with a stepped schedule from 16 000 initial. Salisbury moved to Cedar Rapids from Galesburg Illinois last July after four years there.
