Ebbers Trial Highlights Fraud Ties to WorldCom Leader
In a six week trial prosecutors portrayed Bernard Ebbers as obsessed with keeping WorldCom stock high while large personal loans secured by WorldCom shares fueled panic. The defense pinned the fraud on CFO Scott Sullivan who testified Ebbers directed quarter after quarter to meet numbers. Ebbers denied involvement saying he was a visionary who left accounting to Sullivan. The largely blue collar Cedar Rapids jury deliberated eight days before conviction and awaits sentencing while Sullivan and others face sentencing or civil actions.
