The Iowa consumer protection division warns against purchasing uncut diamonds or other jewels via telephone sales. Assistant Attorney General Julian Garrett says callers claim large profits, but appraisals may be unreliable and the average investor is not an expert.
Attorney General officials foil complaints against Hartford House in North Miami, seeking to bar the company from Iowa trade until a customer list is provided. Garrett urges buyers to get third party appraisals, warns many stones are low grade industrial diamonds, and invites residents who bought stones to contact the AG's office.
The Cedar Rapids Marion Area Chamber of Commerce warns residents about so called free vacations mailed to them. Offers to Las Vegas and Florida cities request registration deposits and refunds claiming guarantees. Investigations by the FTC state attorney general and postal authorities are mounting against many such firms. Refunds are often refused and arrangements vague and uncertain.
