Women Can Make a Difference at Iowa GOP Conference

Vice-president Spiro Agnew told about 550 Iowa Republican women at Drake University that his student dialogue was highly stimulating and rewarding. Lenore Romney joined Gov. and Mrs. Robert Ray and other GOP leaders as she urged women to engage, warning of three dangers to the nation and praising Nixon’s 1969–68 reforms amid Democratic opposition.

Persecution Justified By Misinterpretation Claims

Florence Mason Ben Hubbard a Mt. Mercy college instructor told about 140 women at a Lenten luncheon that the New Testament has been used to justify persecution. He noted the Gospels were written 30 to 60 years after Jesus and cites church synagogue rivalry. Blood Be on Us appears in a Gospel reference to Jewish officials.

Bridge Winners at the YWCA and Greek pledge news

Duplicate Mitchell movement bridge winners were announced at the YWCA with North South first and second place teams and East West winners. The club championship is set for next Wednesday at 7 30 PM. Miss Carole Cherveny became a new Sigma Nu Sigma pledge at Upper Iowa college. Reverend Hubbard spoke on misinterpretations of scripture and mob hatred, urging tolerance, with Mrs. Larry Rickey of Coe college to speak at the YWCA luncheon next week.

Ohio Supreme Court strikes down female worker protections

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that state laws protecting female workers including separate restrooms, bans on lifting over 25 pounds, and prohibitions on midnight shifts or overtime violate federal civil rights laws. The decision, in a suit by a manufacturer, states such laws are pre empted by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and would contradict non discrimination principles. Frank King of the Ohio AFL CIO warned the ruling could be used against women, arguing employers could justify unequal treatment by assigning tasks men can perform.

Queen Elizabeth Ends Asia Africa Tour At Remote Indian Ocean Base

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip wrapped a five hour stop at an isolated Royal Air Force station in the Indian Ocean during their Asia Africa tour. Accompanied by Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the couple visited the base on Wednesday. The tour continues to Seychelles Mauritius and Kenya before ending March 26.

Gladyce Chiverton and Shaffer Wed at St Matthew’s

Gladyce Chiverton and Van Vechten Shaffer married Thursday at 11 oclock in St Matthew’s Catholic church by Rev L V McDonough. Attending were Mr and Mrs Jack Getz, the bride’s brother and sister in law. Mrs Shaffer was a retired Guaranty Bank official. Mr Shaffer helped organize the bank and later chaired its board. Out of town guests included Mrs Richard Crane of Phoenix and Mrs I Stuart Outerbridge of Bermuda. They will reside at 2001 Linden drive SE.
