Pentagon ends KP duty for most servicemen
The Defense Department directs that civilians prepare and serve meals for troops by mid-1970 with limited military exceptions for combat areas and discipline cases. Cooks bakers and food staff will be civilian drawn or contracted, freeing servicemen for military tasks and creating civilian job opportunities. The move follows McNamara era reforms to improve food service and troop availability.
