Budget Pressures Put Teacher Pay Plan on Hold
Iowa budget problems may force lawmakers to delay overhauling the teacher pay system to free 40 million dollars for the 2002 ledger. Senator Jeff Lamberti, Republican Ankeny, says cuts of 200 to 250 million may occur, while Gov. Tom Vilsack insists the pay issue is priority No 1 and must be addressed this year despite the tight budget. The Revenue Estimating Conference meets on the eve of revisions to revenue growth projections under the 99 percent spending limit.

Lawmaker eyes rethink of teacher pay timetable amid budget gap
The budget forecast shows little chance of inflation rising above 1.5 percent by June 30. With $280 million in new 2002 spending and a possible cut to the REC estimate erasing much of a $129 million carryover, Lamberti expects more legislators to grasp the scale of the issue and reconsider the teacher pay timetable.
