Rising river nitrates dominate Cedar Rapids environmental concerns
Cedar Rapids officials say air quality improves while river nitrates rise and threaten wells. Nitrates from farm runoff reduce water safety, with yearly river averages climbing from 1.8 to 6.8 mg/L and visible risk to infant drinking water. Methane from the landfill is being collected to prevent explosions and leachate is monitored via wells outside the site.
