Mixed equity prices follow a sharp rally that began Thursday fueled by merger news and lower interest rates. The Dow slips 4.05 to 985.77 while the NYSE broad index edges up .05 and volume hits 68.29 million shares.

Market notes from Omaha and Chicago provide Friday livestock bids and grain quotes. Hog prices rise for certain grades, cattle scarce for testing, Monday estimates released. Chicago cash grains show wheat at 3.77 and corn around 3.46, with soybeans at 7.32 and butter and eggs holding steady in USDA quotes.
UPI reports Joliet Iowa interest with cattle market scarce and hog trade active early. Barrows and gilts gain up to 1.00, price ranges cited for various weights. Monday's projections call for 2,500 cattle and 1,500 hogs.
Farm News reports cattle feeders had profits only in two months last year and ranchers now carry the smallest number of cattle on feed since 1975. USDA data show a 4 percent drop to 7.13 million head across seven western and midwestern states as February placements and marketings hit multi year lows.

Trade slowed with moderate to good demand as hogs sold mostly higher and sows down. No 1 2 200 230 lb hogs brought 37.50 to 38.75 with western buyers at 39.50, heavier loads up to 300 lb noted. Estimated receipts 75 000 today and 5 000 Saturday. soybeans and corn futures moved modestly on Cedar Rapids market with slight advances for new crops and declines for old crops.
