Dutch marines attacked a government building in Assen and freed about 70 hostages from Moluccan extremists with no fatalities. Three attackers were arrested, one woman died after being tossed from a window, and several injuries were reported as the 20 minute operation unfolded.
Hundreds waited for hours at Linn Court House to obtain 1978 motor vehicle registrations. Law enforcement began issuing tickets at midnight for no stickers and penalties applied for late purchases after the Feb 1 deadline. Ms Faust arrived at 8:45 a.m. and remained waiting at 10:30 a.m.
President Anwar Sadat condemned the weekend Palestinian raid in Israel as sad and tragic while calling for an end to the cycle of retaliation. He said civilians must be protected and noted peace hinges on resolving the Palestinian question amid stalled Egypt Israel talks.

After a three hour meeting the Cedar Rapids Community School Board voted 5 to 2 to close Eisenhower Elementary School in June and transfer its students to Kenwood and Wright Elementary. The board also delayed decisions on a special programs center and on a senior high continuation site, planning further study. 200 people attended at Kennedy High School Auditorium for the vote and discussion.
