The playground commission schedules rope skipping and kite flying contests for spring with two activities during spring break. The girls rope skipping contest is set for Friday March 26 at 2 p.m. in the plaza between city hall and courthouse on the island.
The article outlines a rope jumping program with multiple run patterns and scoring rules, plus a kite tourney set for Friday March 26 at Ellis Park. Two classes exist for students up to eighth grade and for all others including family members. Events include altitude contests for several kite types and artistic, largest, smallest, and unique kite prizes. Hiking plans for Saturday schoolchild excursions are noted.
In Conneaut Ohio Ben Shumaker asked for an oyster while his wife cooked. He bit into a pearl found in the shell which later proved valued at fifteen dollars. The find inspires a new ring idea for Ben.
Harold M. Wies skipper of the SSS Kiwanian sponsored by the Kiwanis club received word from Raymond Lowe regional Sea Scout commodore that the Kiwanian won vice-flagship honors for region eight covering thirty five ships in Iowa Nebraska Missouri Kansas Colorado and Wyoming. The flag will be presented at the Des Moines regional meeting in April. Ak-Sar-Ben of Omaha Ceres of Omaha and Kahawk of Independence Kan earned honorary mention as the Kiwanian earned the runner-up honor. The Kiwanian began as a Sea Scout patrol in 1933 and became a Sea Scout ship in 1934. Last year the local ship advanced to first class and ranked sixth in the region. The mates are Walter Dennis Jackson Yeast and James Bowker.
