Immigration bill passed by House to aid undocumented immigrants
The House approved a 275 to 137 vote on a 245(i) extension bill similar to the Senate version. It would allow up to 200,000 undocumented immigrants to stay while applying for visas, extend deadlines, and require proof of residence before December 21, 2000 to be eligible. The measure faces Senate action and aims to bolster Bush’s stance with Hispanic voters and reach with Mexico’s Vicente Fox.

Pharmaceuticals found in U S rivers and streams
A USGS survey of 139 streams across 30 states finds about 80 percent contain trace pharmaceuticals from human and livestock waste and industry. Seven or more compounds appear in half the streams, 10 or more in a third, with as many as 38 in one sample, though most concentrations are under 1 ppb and not always covered by drinking water standards. The study notes unknown health and environmental effects from complex chemical mixtures.
