Winfield veteran returns Japanese samurai sword to family
Albert Schmidt, a World War II veteran, plans to ship a 3 foot samurai sword back to Nobusuke Kikuchi’s family in Japan. The sword, gifted in 1945 or 1946, hung in Schmidt’s home for decades before he learned its owner’s identity. A chance golf course meeting with Iowa Wesleyan students helped uncover the lineage and start the return process.
