Stockholder group accuses Wilson fraud and mismanagement

A Wilson Foods stockholders group seeks court permission to sue LTV Corp Continental Illinois Bank Kenneth Griggy and Richard Berg over alleged fraud and mismanagement. The petition claims four of five years of poor earnings tied to the spin off from LTV in 1981, a $60 million bank line of credit, and a scheme to defraud debenture holders. Iowa Senate may raise drinking age to 21 in DUI bill

Iowa Senate leader Sen. Donald Doyle plans to add a provision raising the drinking age from 19 to 21 and to strengthen substance abuse evaluations for DUI offenders. He proposes amendments including mandatory evaluations, possible halfway-house sentencing, jail for noncompliance, community service, and restitution for damages. A blue-ribbon committee could report changes by January 1.

Iowa House approves wide powers to police racing

The Iowa House cleared a bill granting authorities new tools to enforce the parimutuel law. It would allow warrantless searches at race tracks, expel undesirable individuals, and require track license applicants to reveal felonies addictions and violence history while consenting to fingerprinting. Violations include possessing devices to stimulate or depress racing animals and sponging. Senate approval pending.

Molasses spill triggers interstate crash near Coralville

A five vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Coralville closes westbound lanes for about four hours after a semi jackknifes spilling hundreds of gallons of molasses. Ila Dockendorff and John Clark are treated and released for minor injuries. investigation continues.
