Washington AP reports unanimous Senate approval ushers a $5 billion Social Security increase to the President, aiming for Tuesday enactment. The plan raises benefits and payroll taxes, boosts the wage base from 7800 to 4000 in 1972, and targets a 6.5 percent rate by 1987.
President Nixon will travel to Lexington Kentucky then to New York for Whitney Young civil rights leader burial services. Florida White House said Nixon canceled two cabinet meetings so many cabinet officers could attend the funeral.
Rockwell Kent an outspoken artist in failing health died as a prominent New York figure. He was known for lithography poetry architecture and rugged landscapes featured in major museums. He faced a stormy public persona and diverse artistic achievements.
Johnson County Iowa City board of supervisors rehires Robert Woodard as county ambulance director on study committee recommendation. Dispute over $1,400 telephones for ambulances fueled dismissal. petitions with over 900 signatures followed. The board cites Woodard’s driving competence and impartial committee findings as basis for reversal.
Prague television reported a group of Czechoslovaks will depart for the Soviet Union soon to undergo cosmonaut training. Soviet Ambassador Stefan Chervonanko said the youths will join the training program in the USSR. Nine people were injured in blasts at a rock concert in Znojmo.
In Des Moines a fire gutted a two story home early today killing three occupants including a 11 year old and a 2 year old. William Anthony Sheperd escaped by jumping from a second story window. Authorities believe the blaze began on the first floor and will continue fuller investigations.
Premier Golda Meir told a London interview that a peace keeping force could supervise a demilitarized Sinai to avert attacks. She suggested Israel keep Sharm el Sheikh and the Gaza Strip was not to be returned. She said Egypt would welcome such a force and warned peace would require painful compromises for Egypt.
Dr Henry Moershel longtime Amana leader and physician died in Cedar Rapids hospital after a long illness. Born in Homestead on April 13 1891 he served as president of the Amana Society and Amana Society Corp and was awarded Germanys Order of Merit in 1955 for lifelong service to the Amana colonies. He married Henrietta Jeck in 1917 and celebrated his 50th year of medical practice in 1967. He held memberships in several medical associations and hospitals staffs.
Sammy Monning spent nine hours at the county courthouse on a demand to lien himself in a theft case but was freed when Judge Alfonse Sepo ruled a 40 day probation was fitting. Fleming, 28, had pled guilty to buying and concealing stolen tires and waited with his newborn baby due date in mind while jail staff delayed. Public defender Ray Back argued the unusual delay warranted mercy, prompting the judge to convert the sentence to probation and grant Fleming another chance.
Saigon based military sources report a shift to air mobility in the Lan Than operation. Vietnamese and US planners emphasize helicopters to avoid direct clashes with six North Vietnamese regiments. The Laotian campaign may end by March 31, with airlifted South Vietnamese troops withdrawn from Sepone area. U S airstrikes claim about 3000 Communist deaths since February. A US helicopter gunship accidentally fired on South Vietnamese marines in Laos, killing four and wounding 38, as anti aircraft fire downed a helicopter over Cambodia.
GRAND RAPIDS AP A city ignition key ban deemed unconstitutional as beyond the power of the town to regulate citizen habits. A driver fined for leaving a key in an unlocked car challenged the measure, which aimed to cut auto thefts but risks absurd prohibitions.
