A Washington County jury acquitted 19 year old Andrew Brock on charges of vehicular homicide from a 2009 fiery crash that killed three people. Prosecutors said he drove too fast on a gravel road and ran a stop sign on May 23 2009.
Elizabeth Behnke, 45, faced an attempted murder charge over allegedly poisoning her ex husband’s milk. She entered an Alford plea to solicitation to commit murder, with the maximum sentence dropping to five years. Sentencing is set for April 25.
Don Schminkey III, 24, said he acted to defend family after a May street brawl at Tait Cummins Park. He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct under an Alford plea, with four days in jail and possible dismissal of the assault charge. The case drew CAIR Iowa's push to label it a hate crime.
The extended Starits family says 26 year old Joseph Starits died after a crash on Highway 30 near Belle Plaine. Laine Dennison 47 of North Liberty is charged with driving while barred left of center and no proof of insurance. Dennison faced multiple traffic offenses and a revoked permit. Starits' relatives urge accountability as the investigation continues. The Starits family mourns while Dennison's legal process moves forward.
