Central Iowans voiced support for a new Amtrak route through their towns at a Des Moines public hearing. Cedar Falls resident Scott Rogers, president of the Iowa Association of Railroad Passengers, urged officials to put Iowa on the right track and bring the rail service to central Iowa.
The speed limit will increase from 55 mph to 65 mph by March 27 on designated sections of Eastern Iowa interstate highways. Maps are on page 4B.
The Iowa Board of Health on Wednesday endorsed a policy to encourage more new mothers to breast-feed. Iowa's current rate is about half after birth, and a state task force aims to raise it to 63 percent. Details on page 4B.

The United Nations Security Council pressed Tariq Aziz, Iraq’s deputy prime minister, on Baghdad’s failure to disclose and destroy missiles and weapons programs. Aziz defended cooperation and criticized sanctions, as he faced questions about reparations, detainees, and rights abuses of Kurds and Shiites.
The Iowa House approved HF 2307 by 68 to 30 to end a loophole that allows wealthy residents with large federal securities interest to wipe out state income tax liabilities through federal deductibility. Critics call it a tax increase for some retirees and near retirees.
