Air Bags or Seat Belts Drivers To Choose in 74
GM plans air bags on top line models for 1974 with optional restraint units. A seat belt interlock will delay starting until belts are fastened, raising costs for buyers. Test fleets report 32 million miles without air bag malfunctions. One victim credits the bag with saving his life after a collision. GM projects about 100,000 cars with air bags in 1974, on Electra Riviera Toronado 93 and Cadillacs. Government rules push passive restraint by 1976, but for 1974–75 many cars use seat belt interlocks, which may provoke driver complaints and startup delays.

Fire Strikes but Manchester Boy Is Alert
Dave Kehrli, 12, saved his younger brother Rex, 4, and protected his parents home in Manchester when an electric short sparked a kitchen fire. He called the fire department, escorted Rex outside, and shut doors to confine the blaze to the kitchen. Fire damage totaled about 5000 dollars, with smoke and water affecting the rest of the house.
