Jury retires without verdict in Feguer case

The Feguer jury, after about six hours of deliberation, retired for the night without reaching a verdict on the kidnap slaying of Dr. Edward Bartels. UPI and AP report the prosecution sought the death penalty for Victor Harry Fegner, who was accused amid arguments over sanity and societal rules.

Pacifists Fail in Attempt To Board Polaris

Two pacifists Ed Guerard and Arthur Harvey tried to board the Polaris submarine Abraham Lincoln during its commissioning at Portsmouth navy yard. They were seized by coast guard and police, fingerprinted, and released without charges after no trespass filing. The protestors, from New England Committee for Non Violent Action, sailed a canoe up the Piscataqua River and marched to UN headquarters in New York.

President moves to end red tape by scrapping 17 committees

President Kennedy eliminated 17 interdepartmental committees in a bid to cut red tape and clarify executive responsibility.
