In Benton County a stolen Kent car led Sheriff James Smith and Deputy Roy Radebaugh to pursue Duane Henry 16 and Roy Geppert 19 from Waterloo. Fred Matuchuk a 42 year old Russian laborer died in hospital from razor wounds inflicted Sunday after 9 a m at the home of Mrs Maude Cassidy 1004 Sixteenth Avenue SE. His former wife Mary 29 was fatally slashed in seventeen places. The couple had been in dispute since the previous Tuesday when Mary Matuchuk filed assault charges and sought a divorce. A murder charge was filed against Fred who remained under police guard until his death. The coroner expressed doubt whether the wounds were personal safety related. an inquest was not yet certain.
A senate motor vehicles committee draft proposes creating a separate motor vehicle department to oversee the highway patrol and drivers license functions. The superintendent would be named by the governor with senate confirmation for four years and a 3600 dollar annual salary, funded from license fees.
The Iowa senate judiciary committee No 2 backed a rewritten measure to legalize sale of liquor and wine by the drink in licensed bars hotels restaurants and clubs. In Sandimas California 65 year old miner W T Shield is entombed 250 feet below the surface after a tunnel roof collapsed during a Crow Canyon water project bore. More than 150 workers labored through the night to reach him with an estimated six to ten hours to reach the trapped man. Emergency crews prepared first aid if he survived the cave in.
The House passes the pink slip publicity repeal by 302 to 98, sending the brief 20 word measure to the Senate. Amendments to limit publicity to county tax assessors or cap income were rejected.

Des Moines AP The Iowa State Executive Council named Walter F. Maley to survey how it may remove Harold M. Cooper chairman of the Iowa liquor commission. Maley will report on charges after reviewing evidence from Cooper’s Cedar Rapids trial and the matter will be sent to the supreme court as Cooper appeals. Governor Herring declined to confirm Maley yet saying there is nothing to announce. Cooper refused to resign after his liquor law conviction.
A suit in the court of claims by the Dixie Terminal company of Cincinnati challenges the government’s authority to call gold liberty bonds for payment ahead of maturity without redeeming in gold. The action could test the nation’s gold policy.
William Reynolds Sizer 68, farmer, died at a Cedar Rapids hospital at 10 40 am Monday from heart disease after several weeks illness. Funeral at Neff chapel Mount Vernon 10 am Wednesday burial at Miles 130 pm. Survived by wife Anna. three sons Gordon George Harry. daughter Thames. siblings Roy Ambrose DePue Blanche. five grandchildren. A daughter Myrle disappeared in 1926 at age 29.
Mrs. Margaret Dows Muzzy died Saturday night at Las Encinas sanatorium in Pasadena California. She is survived by her husband H Earle Muzzy superintendent of the Quaker Oats plant her mother Mrs W G Dows widow of Colonel Dows pioneer of Cedar Rapids and long time leader in the Iowa Electric Light and Power company. Her brother Sutherland Dows vice president of the same company is en route to Pasadena. Funeral and burial will be in Cedar Rapids. Additional relatives include an uncle R S Cook and several aunts.
The actress Harlean Harlow known as Jean Harlow obtained an uncontested divorce from Hal Rosson in a brief Los Angeles court session. She testified he mocked guests and interfered with social events, recalling a party in October 1933 when a singer performed and he made embarrassing remarks.

Herbert Hoadley the incumbent and Frank G. Kanak cashier of the United State Bank won two seats on Cedar Rapids board of education in the district election Monday. Hoadley led with 1107 votes and Kanak had 947 among 2231 ballots cast.
