Six rail crossings to be improved in Cedar Rapids this summer
Cedar Rapids Public Improvements Commissioner Wayne Murdock says several railroad crossings will be vastly improved by summer’s end. A tentative deal with Chicago and North Western Railroad covers rubber crossings on Second and Third avenues west and Eighth Avenue East at Fourth Street, pending final approval. Additional rubber crossings are planned with the Crandie Railroad on Sixth Street SW near Hawkeye Downs and FMC plant, with track removals on Eighth Avenue SE between Second and Third streets. Crossing work is shared among railroad, city, and state funds, with state paying two thirds on primary highways. Murdock targets at least six crossings replaced this year.
