A Marion plant stops producing a high sulfur pre mix used in animal feeds after a Friday explosion and minor fire blamed on flowers of sulfur, the same cause as a November blaze. No injuries or equipment damage reported. owner Kenneth Hartung says the impact on the company will be limited. The plant is at 2823 Seventh Ave. Marion.
Tickets for the Linn-Mar Pops Concert Saturday at the high school auditorium are sold out. Sunday’s 2 p.m. show remains available. YMCA Marion schedules family gym and swim from 1 to 4 p.m.
Michael T. Rinehart 30, recently freed after an appeal of a murder conviction, is in custody on first degree kidnapping charges. He is held on 100000 bond after allegedly abducting a Fort Dodge woman, forcing her to drive to a rural area where he beat and assaulted her. Rinehart previously spent 15 years in prison for a 1963 stabbing death.
Second in a series of three artists in residence brings 23 year old Des Moines potter Guy Wuttke to Vernon Junior High School. He will work with seventh graders all week and eighth graders at noon, speak to Marion faculty Wednesday at 2:45 p.m., in the art room. Wuttke, Drake University 1976 graduate, is sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council with Grant Wood AEA and the Wamac Conference.
Joliet and Sioux City livestock markets report Friday activity. In Joliet cattle 300 head, steady loads with steers 48.25 and heifers 44.00. hogs 1 200 head, 75 to 1.00 lower, No 1-2 210-240 lb 48.00-48.50. In Sioux City hogs 4,500 head, butchers 25-50 lower, No 1-3 200-260 lb 48.00-48.50, sows 43.50-45.25 depending on weight.
AP USDA report from Omaha shows hogs 3,500 head with barrows and gilts mostly steady to 50 lower and some weights steady, sow prices up to 50 higher. cattle and calves 1,200 with cows steady and other classes scarce, cutters 3.00 to 34.00, canners 27.00 to 31.00. Estimated receipts for Monday: cattle 6,000 hogs 5,000 sheep 400.
