Lambs Gain Best While Suckling Says Purdue Expert
LAFAYETTE IND Lambs nursing heavy milking ewes can gain up to two thirds of a pound daily, while weaned lambs seldom gain more than a third. Henry Mayo of Purdue advises liberal feeding for ewes after lambs reach a week old. Orphan lambs should nurse from a foster ewe or be fed cow’s milk if no surrogate is available. Young lambs need two hour feeds of one ounce of milk, increasing as they grow. By ten days, lambs can eat grain and hay, with a sunny creep in the barn as a feeding area.
