Suspended Iowa Fire Chief Ends Life
W L Koppin age 52 was suspended as Newton Iowa fire chief and city building commissioner after a larceny charge. He killed himself in his basement with a .22 rifle Monday morning. He left a widow and four sons, all four having served in the armed forces. Koppin had served six years as fire chief and had been removed from the building commissioner post after an emergency council meeting. The charge stemmed from an alleged misappropriation of funds from the Newton Rural Fire Truck association, based on a $50 check from C. H. and Will J. Herbold after a Nov 24 fire. Koppin had been the association’s collector for three years. J G McFadden will serve as acting building commissioner.
