California visa fraud ring reveals gaps in student tracking
A California operation charged with helping Middle East nationals fraudulently obtain and maintain U S student visas exposed weaknesses in the foreign student tracking system used after the Sept 11 attacks. Prosecutors say Eamonn Higgins and about a dozen associates aided students to attend classes, write papers, and pass finals under altered or guaranteed GPA marks. The case fuels calls for in person interviews every 30 days during the academic year and every 60 days in breaks, while officials caution against overburdening colleges with immigration duties.
