EPA waste threat overestimates and costs
The New York Times reports two congressional research agencies say the toxic waste problem is far bigger and costlier than EPA estimates. OTA cites over 10,000 sites needing priority cleanup, potentially up to 100 billion dollars, far above EPA's 2,500 site on the national priority list and 16 to 22 billion cost estimate. GAO testimony suggests as many as 378,000 sites could be addressed, with EPA inventory possibly reaching 25,000.
