Two Monitor Sailors Buried at Arlington National Cemetery
Two unknown Civil War sailors from the USS Monitor, recovered from the turret during its 2002 salvage, were laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony included a gun salute and a performance of America the Beautiful as Navy officials honored those who served aboard the ironclad during the 1862 battle with CSS Virginia. Researchers could not positively identify the men but narrowed candidates to six, with one likely being Robert Williams, the ship’s fireman.
