Nine North Fayette High School students and their teacher Julie Hasler escaped serious injury when a transfer bus hit a concrete abutment at JFK Airport. The driver, David Torres, 24, of Brooklyn, was trapped and later listed in critical but stable condition. Students and Hasler were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of cuts, bruises, and shock.
Danish Book World in Cedar Rapids expected to reopen today after Linn County Court ordered the store and Beverly Realty to terminate operations. An appeal bond of 9000 dollars will allow continued operations while the Iowa Supreme Court reviews the ruling citing a zoning ordinance banning adult entertainment near schools churches or residences.
The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee approved a bill to raise the minimum wage from 3.35 to 4.65 an hour by stages. It rejected a Bush administration proposal for a smaller increase with training wage cuts. President Bush indicated he would veto any rate above 4.25. Senator Kennedy said a floor vote could come next week with strong support.
A Iowa conference committee approved a bill setting a state minimum wage starting at 3.85 per hour on Jan 1 1990 and rising 40 cents a year for two years. The measure limits exemptions to firms with gross sales under 217000, narrowing federal guidelines.
