At 11 p.m. Saturday a low pressure system moved across southern Pennsylvania spreading precipitation across the eastern United States. Snow fell from northeastern New York into northern New England. heavy snow warnings were in effect with 2 to 6 inches expected. The snow turned to rain in southern New England and western New York saw freezing drizzle. Thunderstorms and showers extended from the Appalachians to the Tennessee Valley with gusts to 75 mph in Pennsylvania and a weather watch active in New Jersey and surrounding states.

Shellsburg man charged drives drunk after wreck near Shellsburg

Four people were hospitalized and one man charged with drunk driving after an early Saturday crash on County Road W-26 near Shellsburg. John Bieber 26 of Route 1 Shellsburg was charged with drunk driving. Cottrell was moved to University Hospitals in Iowa City in fair condition. Three others were trapped and rescued with Jaws of Life before hospital transfers.

Teen Held After High Speed Chase in Linn County

An 18 year old, David A. Opheim of 175 Jayulyn Drive NW, was spotted from the air by the Highway Patrol on Highway 13 north of Marion at 5 58 p m. He was clocked at 90 mph and later 115 mph along Wendy Oaks Road. Ground units pursued him for 15 minutes before arrest on charges of speeding twice drunk driving improper passing and violating a stop sign.

Garage Fire Destroys Structure on Mount Vernon Road SE

Cedar Rapids and Bertram Township firefighters answered a blaze at 4217 Mount Vernon Road SE at 5:21 p.m. Saturday. The garage, located in Bertram Township near city line, was destroyed. Cause undetermined. no injuries reported.

Benches replace couches in Brown office in bid to save money

Tradition seems bleak as California officials remove the soft carpets and couches from Gov. Edmund Brown Jr's reception area. Two long wooden benches with straight backs replace the chairs. Press secretary Robbie Metzger says it is not to deter sit ins but to cut costs. Brown comments, This looks bleak.
