U S diplomat Sean Holly and banker Gabriel Biguria were freed by FAR guerrillas in Guatemala after holding Holly 38 hours to secure release of three jailed rebels. The group previously kidnapped Foreign Minister Alberto Fuentes Mohr, and the fate of a second captive remains unclear.
Elmcrest Golf and Country Club president Norman Kessler said a Sunday fire destroyed the main building at 1000 Thirty sixth Street NE causing damage over $250000 and prompting a plan to rebuild on the same site. Insurance covers the loss and construction could begin this year. The fire began in the dining room or nearby bar with three alarms and eight fire units responding. no injuries were reported.
Al Swegle reports from Cedar Rapids that six month old Hampshire boar Shakespeare, bred by J. T. Settles of Winfield, sold for a record $3700 at the state Hampshire sale. Wayne McDonald, breed secretary, confirms the new Iowa Hampshire record. Fred Haley of Canton Georgia bought the boar for his new commercial hog enterprise featuring three purebred lines. Settles has a history of champions and top hogs at Lisbon tests, with the Lisbon sale producing two top sellers totaling $2500 to Lee F. Bebb of Bagley.
Cedar Rapids residents face higher property taxes after a ten percent rise in residential assessed valuations and a near four mill increase in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. City Assessor Dale Piersall cites increased governmental costs and mill requirements as the main causes, noting that without higher asks the levy would have lowered with the valuation boost. He adds that in 1969 Cedar Rapids saw a $22 million leap in total assessed value, about half from the residential rise.

Wholesale prices rose 0.3 percent in February led by farm products, softer than January’s 0.8 percent. Farm products up 1.1 percent while wholesale egg prices fell 10.1 percent and live poultry down 8.1 percent. Lumber, rubber, and textiles declined. index stood at 116.4, about 4.8 percent higher than a year earlier.
The White House confirms an army captain, Joseph Bush, was killed in Laos on February 10, 1969 while firing on enemy troops at a Plain of Jars compound. Officials say he was not in ground combat operations and that 26 other Americans have been killed or missing due to hostile action in Laos.
Senators Goldwater and Kennedy urged lowering the voting age to 18 arguing federal law can do it without a constitutional amendment. Kennedy said Congress has power to prohibit literacy tests and set residency rules, and could apply the same to allow 18-year-olds to vote. Goldwater defended youth and criticized liberal media for portraying youth negatively, urging more idealism in voting.
Santa Ana authorities removed a large menagerie from a 35 foot trailer after police heard noises. Johnny Whiteriver 67 a circus clown and his wife kept 150 pound bears a burro wallaby ocelot bobcat goats and many other animals in makeshift enclosures. Officials loaded the animals into the Grange county animal shelter while the city studies ordinances on keeping animals in city limits. Whiteriver said the animals are all he has and he feeds them twice daily and lets them exercise.
