Fire claims invalid trapped in bedroom in Iowa City
Ernie Elam a wheelchair dependent man who was paralyzed on one side and missing a leg died in an accidental fire early Saturday at his two bedroom mobile home in Hilltop Mobile Home Park Iowa City. Relatives and neighbors tried to reach him as flames engulfed the structure but the midsection burned away and the home was gutted. Fire officials said a cigarette ignited a living room couch and the mobile home lacked smoke detectors. Ed Helton Elam's half brother and several others escaped with burns and smoke inhalation. Suffering relatives including Elam's common law wife Sandra Allen and her grandchildren were not harmed.
