Water may taste funny due to runoff and organic matter from melting snow. City officials assure the water is safe to drink as tests remain positive. Activated carbon and chlorine are being used to improve taste, with more equipment on the way.
Iowa forecast shows fair and not so cold in the west with highs 20s to 40s and variable winds. The edition lists divorce petitions for Nasinec and Pazour, police court fines for drunkenness, new births at Mercy and St Luke's, multiple fire and incident reports, and obituaries in Oelwein Belmond Elberon Manchester Brandon Hazleton and Elberon.
The storm postponed six boys basketball tournaments and left many motorists stranded. Sixty five Blencoe students stayed at their school overnight, along with eighteen stranded motorists. A Des Moines Ottumwa bus rested at Ivy then moved on. A Chicago Omaha bus halted at Colfax with eighteen passengers lodging in the Legion hall. Ankeny had two hundred stranded. Cedar Rapids Steamboat Rock Ottumwa Wellsburg girls teams could not leave Marshalltown for the state AAU tournament. Western towns lost telephone service but expected restoration by noon.
About seventy percent of Cedar Rapids residents have filed federal income tax returns. Herman Stecklein of the Internal Revenue Service said most filings are on schedule ahead of the March 15 deadline. He urged late filers to act this week to avoid last minute crowds and noted no extra hours are planned.
Lee R. Johnson 45 of Marrian Kansas suffered a possible dislocation of the left knee after being struck by a car at First Street and Third Avenue SW at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken by ambulance to St Luke's hospital where his condition was listed as fairly good Wednesday. Ronald Kimball 18 of 1847 O Avenue NW was fined five dollars and costs in traffic court Wednesday for failing to yield to a pedestrian.
An overflow crowd of 46 couples attended the YMCA square dance callers clinic sponsored by the City Playground Commission. Irwin Nelson led the program and split the clinic into two classes on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for three more sessions and to accommodate more registrants.
Union rep Peterson tells Linn county supervisors Beeson Seevell and Hood that road crews lag two years behind industry. Beeson cites 1943 pay rises and current wages plus holidays and sick leave, while Hood calls for a wage ceiling. Board remains firm but accepts a five-cent raise in principle. union to confer with workers before next meeting.
Flooding and ice jams disrupted Ellis park bayou with moored boats broken free and boathouses damaged. Cedar Rapids reported river stages near 11 feet at times while the annual river show drew hundreds, traffic clogged Ellis boulevard and First Street NW as spectators watched the ice move and river rise.
Ninety jurors drawn for Linn county district court to report April 11 at 9 a.m. Judge Floyd Philbrick presiding. List includes jurors from Cedar Rapids, Marion, Clinton, Oto, Springville, Mt. Vernon and other townships with many named individuals.
Crowds of over 200 watched from cars as ice jam moved downstream during a barge rescue. Stanek's Wrecker Service deployed two mobile cranes and cables while Messinger & Sons assisted, with police keeping spectators back for safety. Officials said pulling the heavy barge to shore was not feasible given the ice movement.
County supervisors scheduled April 3 at 10 am to open bids for about 27 000 dollars of road resurfacing. The project covers 10.65 miles on 11 short stretches of sec- tion roads.

The will of Merton L Buck who died February 3 was admitted to probate on Wednesday. C E Tripp was named executor with a bond of 20000 dollars. The estate goes to a daughter Thyra Evans.
The will of William M. Wiley who died February 23 was admitted to probate on Wednesday with the entire estate left to his wife. Two civil suits were dismissed on motions by plaintiffs: Lucille B. Broghammer executrix vs Harvey and Ivadine Miskimen, and Hearn Stevenson Motor Co. vs La Vera Tracy. The Theodore F. Paulson vs F A Gowdy damage suit was dismissed on Wednesday on motion of the plaintiff.
The Vlach Motor Company filed a lawsuit against John E. Wharton seeking 126.13 as allegedly due on a promissory note.
Services for Louis Broulik 1530 Seventh avenue SE will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Barta Hesser chapel with Rev Zdenek F Pauk of Hus Memorial Presbyterian church and Mizpah Masonic lodge officiating. Entombment follows at Cedar Memorial mausoleum. Master Masons to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Mrs. Dwight W. Wilson 29 of 303 Eighth Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died Tuesday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Born in Clinton she came from Oska loosa. Survived by husband a daughter Barbara Ann Gilmore Evanston Ill father Frank Mathews Cedar Rapids sister Gladys Davidson Davenport two brothers D E White Clyde White Burlington. Body at Rice funeral home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral announcement to follow.
Louis Prazak 83 of 128 Sixteenth Avenue SW died Wednesday afternoon at home. Funeral arrangements are being made by Janeba funeral home. Born in Czechoslovakia he came to the city as an infant and lived here since. He is survived by his wife Katie and several nieces and nephews.
The senate commerce committee approved President Truman's nomination of Richard F. Mitchell of Fort Dodge Iowa for another six year term on the Interstate Commerce Commission.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety warns motorists to switch to 1950 plates by March 15. Drivers found with 1949 plates after that date will face arrest and fines for improper registration.

An AP report from Frankfurt notes a mild earthquake in Western Germany felt in Bonn for about seven minutes with no damage reported. The tremor prompted brief alarm but caused no injuries or structural harm.
The final six week obedience training class for dogs, sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Kennel Club, opens tonight at 7 30 in the Memorial Coliseum basement. Ralph Bates, in charge of two prior six week courses for the All Breed Dog show at Hawkeye Downs in May, announced the opening. Admission is free with sessions for advanced and beginning obedience over six Wednesday nights.
Two Cedar Rapids youths joined the regular navy as seaman recruits. Mervin H. Dochterman aged 17 and Clifford E. Wilcox aged 17, both from Cedar Rapids, report to San Diego for recruit training. Officials say the Cedar Rapids quota for March was not filled and future quotas may rise.

The Cedar Rapids YWCA and Planned Parenthood Council start the series Marriage for Moderns with Dr Victor Howery as special consultant. The first meeting at 7 30 p m covers dating and courtship. Other speakers include Dr John Moore Dr William Moerschel and Dr Harold Saunders.
The Cedar Rapids chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants discussed Iowa state unemployment insurance rates and benefits. Leaders included Co. J. Callahan of the Iowa state employment office and James C. Lynn of the Iowa Employment Security Commission who explained eligibility and disallowances.
