Iowa health officials project 1 720 lung cancer deaths this year and urge lawmakers to spend tobacco settlement money on prevention and cessation. Dr Charles Lynch of the Iowa Cancer Registry says the state slated to receive about 74 million through 2001 and about 50 million annually for 25 years. The epidemic level of lung cancer is highlighted as a priority while overall cancer deaths exceed 6 300 nationwide and the five year survival for lung cancer remains about 15 percent.
