Hanson Construction of Washington Iowa resumes work on the Interstate 380 overpass at 42nd Street NE. Crews drive steel pilings with a diesel crane, each weighted by a 690 pound anvil, to be encased by concrete piers. Dragline crews dig pier holes while welders set lines to ensure correct angle.
Hearings begin Wednesday on a comprehensive Linn County zoning rewrite aimed at preserving prime farmland. The plan rezones all agricultural land to limit dwellings to one on 35 acres unless a zoning change is approved, with hearings through March and final approval possible mid April.
Linn County moves toward a rural flood insurance program led by FEMA official Rich Leonard. Participation will be voluntary but nonparticipation bars rural residents from federally insured loans for buildings in the 100 year flood plain. The study, prompted by Cedar Rapids spillover development, awaits printing and hearings before enactment. Structures elevated above the flood plain will gain access to cheaper insurance rates.

Champions included Mills Brothers Clinton Illinois bred gilt and Bennett's Polands Martinsville Illinois reserve gilt, Julie News Mallicoat Virginia Illinois champion gilt, Fred Hellyer Bushnell Illinois reserve gilt, Wilsons Markleville Indiana champion boar, and Brad Ragsdale Roosevelt Oklahoma reserve boar. About 151 breeding stock and 45 market hogs were slated for sale at 1 p.m. with judge Rick Maloney of Duncan Oklahoma.
