Advocates of gender equity argue college football’s billion-dollar popularity drives athletic departments to add more women players to satisfy Title IX while avoiding new women’s sports. At Iowa, the women’s rowing program lists 89 participants in fall 2014, about 40 percent above the NCAA Division I average of 64.4.
The U S Department of Education OCR will visit the University of Iowa the week of April 11 for a broad probe into gender equity in sports. The concerns include facilities, financial aid, practice times, recruitment, and a roster size that researchers say reflects a widening gap between men’s and women’s programs. Two complaints since 2015 allege Title IX rights violations tied to how female athletes are treated and how investigations occur.
