A Utah House panel moves to ban cold beer sales in Iowa tying it to a raise in the drinking age from 19 to 21. The proposal, labeled a "bozo idea" by Speaker Donald Avenson, passed 11 to 10 but faces uncertain fate on the House calendar.
The House approved 255 to 168 a farm aid measure with 1.85 billion in loan guarantees and 100 million to cut loan rates, plus early commodity loans. Reagan aides expect a veto, while Republicans warned the move weakens chances to override.
The Senate Budget Committee voted 18 to 4 to limit next year’s Defense Department spending to inflation plus modest real increases. The plan cuts Reagan’s proposed defense outlays by 79.3 billion over three years, setting 1986 at an 11 billion bump and inflation 4 percent for the year. Grassley said the defense figure is key to budgeting consensus.
Thousands of tons of granite toppled into a tunnel on Interstate 40 outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park four miles south of the Tennessee line. No injuries were reported but the tunnel will be closed up to nine months with about 1 million dollars in damage.
