Fourteen enter innocent pleas in Cedar Rapids court

Fourteen individuals entered innocent pleas Thursday at arraignments before U.S. Magistrate James Hodges in Cedar Rapids federal court. Trials are set for March 24 or later on various charges including embezzlement, firearms violations, mail theft, counterfeit schemes, and obstruction of a navigable waterway.

IPS Is Cited for Fraud Restitution Ordered in Linn District

Linn district court found Independent Postal Systems of America committed consumer fraud. Judge Robert Osmundson ordered restitution to defrauded purchasers and directed the attorney general to provide affidavits for claims. The Oklahoma City company did not defend, and must pay for state investigation and prosecution costs.

A Linn county woman received 1240.11 of her 9500 claim against Lindale Plaza owners General Growth Properties after tripping on a raised sidewalk section on Sept 4 1973. Deputy Disciplined For Not Seeking Aid for Prisoner

Deputy Eugene Parks is reassigned from patrol to radio dispatcher duties for an indefinite period for failing to obtain medical treatment for a prisoner injured during arrest on February 28. Sheriff Walter Grant stressed the move is not based on the prisoner’s claim of excessive force. The prisoner, Patrick Kaplan, was taken to a hospital for possible facial injuries after an altercation and a slip on ice near the patrol car.

Second Union Seeks To Represent Cedar Rapids City Workers

The Iowa Public Employees Relations board received petitions from two unions seeking to represent Cedar Rapids city employees. The Teamsters target police, street, and airport staff, while the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees covers all blue collar city workers. A three member PER board will determine the appropriate bargaining unit, possibly including streets and airport. A hearing must occur within 30 days of the initial petition, followed by an election under PER supervision.

Des Moines Escapee Nabbed in Linn County

Gregory E. Jones, 20, arrested by state bureau of criminal investigation agents and Linn deputies on Highway 150 two miles north of Center Point. He was wanted for escaping from a Des Moines halfway house. Time of escape and custody details were not released. investigators followed him after spotting him driving on a gravel road. He offered no resistance.
