Guantanamo Detainees Span Wide Social Spectrum
AP reports from Guantanamo transcripts show detainees retired to a broad mix of backgrounds from Afghan farmers to London aristocrats. The detainees included a Saudi veteran of 1980s fighting in Afghanistan and a Londoner accused of harboring radical figures. The Pentagon says many are al Qaeda or Taliban, though some claim innocence or change of heart in custody. The stories underscore the challenge of defining who is a terrorist amid post 9 11 war.
