House GOP ends bid to fund Homeland Security over immigration fight

Congress passed a Homeland Security funding bill as Speaker Boehner abandoned stalled attempts to add immigration restrictions. The 257 167 vote crossed party lines with Democrats backing the measure to avert a shutdown through Sept 30. Obama expected to sign. Senate previously approved. Boehner cited the need to move past the standoff and press court battles over executive action. Conservatives criticized the retreat, urging a tougher stance ahead of 2016.

Health care costs slow but workers pay more

A Center for American Progress report finds employer costs rise slower than health care spending, yet workers see higher premiums and out of pocket expenses. From 2007 to 2018, worker out of pocket costs climbed from 665 to 800 dollars while employer premium coverage stayed dominant but shrank. The report suggests clearer cost disclosures, sharing savings with workers, and expanded access to primary care without cost sharing.
