Roommate murder trial opens with self defense plan
In Linn County District Court Cedar Rapids Jose Aguirre Arreola 44 faces first degree murder charges for the death of roommate Louis Wales. Public defenders Brian Sissel and David Grinde outline self defense and diminished capacity intoxication as the defense. Judge Koehler ruled an alleged confession inadmissible citing language barriers and intoxication. Aguirre Arreola a Mexican national with a valid work permit has worked in Linn County since 1999. Interpreter Boatart Cochran assists with translations for the proceedings.

Father pleads not guilty in Dubuque murder case
Michael Walker, 38, of Dubuque, pleads not guilty to two counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder after prosecutors say he killed his two children and stabbed his wife. Trial scheduled for April 28. Walker held on $1.6 million bond.
