Higher Social Security Checks for Widows in 1973
Social Security district manager James Wood in Cedar Rapids says the 1973 reform increases retirement payments for most widows and dependent widowers. Benefits for widows begun at 65 or later equal the husband’s 65-year-old benefit, with various phased increases and earlier-start reductions preserved. About 4 million widows and dependent widowers nationwide now receive higher payments, first shown in February checks.

Academic Credit for Iowa Police Training Okayed
Kirkwood Community College will award up to ten quarter hours of academic credit toward an associate degree for police training completed at state academies. Camp Dodge officers can waive Criminal Investigation I and Introduction to Law Enforcement, Cedar Rapids recruits can waive Patrol Procedures for credit.
