Developers eye Smulekoff's as Cedar Rapids weighs new use
About 35 developers preservationists and contractors toured the vacant Smulekoff's five story building to discuss converting it to a mixed use project. City analyst Caleb Mason said market rate housing is preferred but not required while Richard Sova of Landover Corp noted interest from both local and outside groups. Prospective renovators note the shell must be rebuilt to code and a mix of housing, commercial and office spaces will be needed with a possible $2.4 million purchase and up to $15 million in renovation costs. Deadline for proposals is April 27.
