Mint says new nickels on the way
U S Mint ships 180 million new nickels to the Federal Reserve, first of redesigned coins honoring the 1803 Louisiana Purchase with Jefferson on the front. The Westward Journey Nickel Series replaces Monticello on the back, with an 1804 1806 Lewis and Clark issue due in fall.

The five cent coin enters its first makeover in 66 years with designs honoring the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. About 900 million nickels already produced and 180 million sent to the Fed as of March 1. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore will unveil the “peace pipe nickel” on Thursday.
